With its Office of Adult and Family Education (OAFE), ACEOP serves West Virginia's communities of families through the provision of client-centered educational programs. The primary goal of OAFE is to assist families and communities, traditionally underserved, in improving their overall well-being by providing them with access to educational programs and resources. "The more opportunities that are available to today's families, the better equipped they are to address current day-to-day issues" says Kim Hutton, Family Education Extension Specialist.
Successful office initiatives include the Helping Our Undergraduates Succeed in Education (HOUSE) and Phase II programs. These on-campus residential facilities provide at-risk youth and victims of domestic violence/homelessness with the opportunity to attend college. One of OAFEs most popular offerings is the Baby Think It Over program, which addresses teen pregnancy prevention through the use of life-like infant simulators. Teens are taught how to care for their infant doll, and then take it home for a weekend of care – the success of which is measured via computer printout on return.
Other office initiatives include programming that focuses on active parenting of teens, independent living skills, babysitting skills, and Families in Action. For more information, please call (304) 766-5711 or toll-free at 1-866-WV-STATE.
