ABOUT US
Since 2003, Charleston-Kanawha Housing and West Virginia State University Extension has partnered together to bring self-sufficiency programs to low-income housing residents within the Charleston, West Virginia area. Neighborhood Networks Grants through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) made our vision a reality along with many wonderful residents and local organizations. To date more than 700 participants of all ages have attended programs that focus on Computer Literacy, GED Preparation, Health & Nutrition, Homework/Tutoring, Internet Surfing, Life Skills, Literacy, and Workforce Development. Below is a listing of our creative workshops that relate to these categories.
CKH and WVSUE attribute many factors that have added to our success. One key is that our computer labs are small which allows lots of attention for those that appreciate one-on-one and small group activities. Open lab hours are another factor as volunteers and staff members schedule regular hours throughout the week. This open time is our most informal time when you would probably see each person working on something different. Other successes have developed through our hands-on approach and consistent programming with approximately 100 programs delivered each year.
