Training
The WVSU NASA ERC provides FREE training sessions to West Virginia educators on the following programs:
STARLAB
The portable planetarium that is an innovative multidisciplinary educational tool that can motivate students to learn about Astronomy, Earth Science and Life Science. STARLAB can also be a learning environment for Language Arts, Social Studies and Math. It can be used with students in kindergarten through college and with adults. Versatility and portability make it a unique piece of educational equipment that can be used in all areas of the curriculum and with all grade levels.
STARLAB consists of a silver fabric dome, a projector, a fan, and a vast array of projection cylinders. STARLAB can be checked out by those who have been trained by the ERC staff.
For more information about STARLAB, visit: http://www.starlab.com.
Kindernauts
A new program recently created by Karen Davis and Valerie Graves that applies to the "budding astronauts." This is a kit that includes everything from posters and puzzles to child-sized space suits and do-it-yourself MMU packs! A complete training notebook with activities and content information is provided at the training workshop. The Kindernauts kit can be checked out by those who have been trained by the ERC staff.
GPS
In the classroom, Global Positioning Systems can be used to present the mathematics of triangulation, to explore geography, geology, and navigation, and to develop an understanding of latitude, longitude, and altitude. A training session is approximately 3 hours in length and is available to all 4-12 educators in West Virginia. A class set of 16 GPS units can be checked out by those who have been trained by the ERC staff.
HOSO
The Hands On Science Outreach program is an after school science program for children enrolled in fourth and fifth grades. This community project stimulates "science in your life" awareness through the fun of experiments, games, music and projects. The program operates one hour per week for eight weeks. Kits containing all lessons, equipment and supplies are provided for the participating schools. Training is free of charge , but there is a cost for the HOSO kits. Please visit the HOSO website to receive additional information.
