Center Objectives
To advance the studies of Science, Technology and Mathematics at West Virginia State University and West Virginia State Community and Technical College. CASTEM will support and assist existing WVSU Sponsored Programs in the Graduate and Undergraduate programs in the STEM disciplines.
Strategy
- To introduce and promote quantitative and qualitative approaches to understanding the problems associated with the STEM program areas.
- To seek opportunities for bridging the gap in mathematics skills of entering freshmen, while encouraging them to pursue STEM majors.
- To increase the number of STEM majors who have significant research experience at the undergraduate level so they are capable of entering graduate school with stronger credentials.
- Mentor and address the needs of the students enrolled in STEM disciplines at WVSU to ensure retention and graduation.
- To take the necessary steps to promote math and science starting at the K-12 levels and extending to college graduation.
- To offer professional development to teachers at the K-12 level.
- Seek funding opportunities that will create opportunity for improving participation of STEM faculty in research experiences that involve students and promote faculty development.
- Seek funding opportunity that will develop a stronger curriculum in mathematics and all STEM gatekeeper courses.
