Urban planning and the need to get away from the Automotive Culture

After reading a recent article in the WV State Journal discussing our dependence on the car as transportation even for short around town distances; I began wondering what other ideas were out there?

What do you think WV needs to move citizens away from the automotive dependency culture? For our health and the environment’s safety we need to get back to a “walker-friendly” city lifestyle.

Why do you think this has changed over time and how can we start moving it in the other direction?
