It’s that time of year that everyone is getting their seeds ordered for their garden and I am barraged with questions asking about what is the best tomato variety to plant. To be honest I don’t have a favorite tomato variety. I guess I have tasted too many tomatoes and find that there are many varied uses for the tomatoes to pick just one or two favorite varieties. My staff has some favorites: Orange King was a big favorite last summer in our field along with Juliet, a large grape or saladette tomato that was a1999 AAS winner. They also like Jetsetter and Delicious. When talking with gardeners and growers I often hear about Brandywine, but I haven’t been that impressed. This winter we are growing several Brandywine strains in our greenhouse because maybe we haven’t grown the strain that everyone else loves. I am always on the look out for new varieties and there are more tomato varieties than we have growing space. So, what’s your favorite tomato variety?

I live in the San Fernando
I live in the San Fernando Valley near Los Angeles. I grow tomatoes in EarthBoxes on my top-floor balcony with an unobstructed southern exposure. (very hot and sunny) Juliets are my favorite for their high yield, great taste, and perfect snacking size. However, I must be religious about watering them every day in the heat of the summer because they use enormous amounts of water mid-season. It is now May 24, 2008 and I already have a few almost-ripe tomatoes on my Juliet plant! Imagine that! Getting my first ripe tomato before June 1st!

Tomato
I love the cherry tomatoes, they are perfect for salads or to just eat on the side of any dish! Sometimes it seems the cherry tomatoes are almost sweet tasting. Those are the best.

Cherry Vs. Grape Tomatoes

What about the grape tomatoes? Do you like those as well as the cherry tomatoes? I have six grape tomato lines in my greenhouse that we are looking at to decide on varieties to recommend to farmers. Want to come an trial them?

I LIKE THE BETTER BOY- ALSO THE LITTLE CHERRY TOMOATOES THEY GROW LONG AND ARE DELIGHTFUL FOR SALADS- HAD AN OLD WV FRIEND WHO LIKED TO PUT A PIECE OF COPPER WIRE IN THE STEM OF HIS BETTER BOY TOMOATOES - HE SAID HENEVER HAD ANY TROUBLE WITH BLIGHT-
